Menezes de Souza Brazil
About the Artist
Menezes de Souza grew up in the interior of North West Brazil. He spent his childhood in rural Brazil which shows in his work, the houses in many of his paintings are typical of this region. He began painting at 19, is self taught following the ‘naif’ tradition and has never stopped. Menezes likes to draw on the colourful aspects of rural living and community in Brazil, showing how men, women and children gather outside. He often paints religious or folkloric ceremonies, which reflect the rich history of this region from African based religions such as Candomble to Catholic ceremonies. Menezes’ work has been used widely in Brazil illustratively and on items such as postcards. His work can also be found in the Museum of Naif in Rio de Janeiro.
