By the River in Old Bali

list price: $265 | Discount: 0% | Views: 1025

This painting captures a peaceful commonality of life in old Bali. On the slowly modernizing island in Indonesia, there is much nostalgia of times passed, when women went without shirts just as their brothers would have, and strong social cohesion kept everybody fed and sheltered without 9-to-5 jobs and traffic jams and international tourism. The painting speaks of a wealth that predates—and so undermines—the idea that what’s new is always an improvement.

Artist: Manik Sumaretria

Prior to art school, Manik’s moniker was Young Artist, and his playful scenes of jungle life still hang in art markets around Bali. In 1995 he studied art at SMSR, in Indonesia’s cultural hub: Ubud, Bali. In retrospect, he gives thanks to all of his instructors for being very critical of his work. Having already a taste of success as an amateur, it was hard for Manik to take criticism, at that time. Manik is a dedicated Hindu and follows all traditions and ceremonies with care, and if a gesture strikes him with a feeling of exuberant purity and calm, he tries to remember it, for later.
