This large painting depicts the first King of the Ashanti people, King Opokuwear, who reigned over 200 years ago. He is remembered as a great and powerful king because of his good deeds and action, and as one who always reasoned with empathy and wisdom for his people. He is dressed in traditional Ashanti dress, colored gold to portray his vast riches and purple to represent his kingliness. His many wives surround him, and he holds a machete in his hand to represent the traditional powers that are passed down from king to king. As legend goes, King Opokuwear overthrew the British and gave the land back to his people, and so many believe that he had divine powers to manage such a feat.
