The Eldest of the Family

list price: $1000 | Discount: 53% | Views: 2871

In this piece, the rhythm and strong ties of responsibility in Ghanaian family life is captured perfectly with Murnazi's intimate portrayal of love, innocence, and duty. This sensitive portrait captures an older brother carrying his younger sister, complementing his strong grasp with an always watchful eye. The younger child, safely nestled in the reliable arms of her elder brother, is curiously intent on the viewer, while the protective older sibling intently watches her with a complex expression …perhaps remembering his own carefree days of being carried on his mother’s hip.

Artist: Joseph King Murnazi

Joseph and his family come from the northern region of Ghana, and as his name suggests, is linked to tribal royalty. Joseph's tribe has a long history, and regularly organizes a number of festivals throughout the year including the "festival of lights." While Joseph's tribe is known for handmade crafts, his family is known for painting, and it was through his father's instruction that Joe learned to paint. While his father specializes in intricate portraits, Joseph prefers to depict people engaged in craft and in celebration. He aims to create excitement and movement in his paintings, in part, by choosing pastels combined with bold, bright colors.
