Farms or fazendas are a big part of Brazilian rural life. Outside the main cities thousands work in agriculture and Minas Gerais near Rio de Janeiro is a big producer. In this painting the year-round process of collecting oranges in this region is depicted. The artist particularly wanted to reflect the number of women who work on these farms, which is common practice in Brazil.

Artist: Cassia Lima

Cassia Lima has been painting for 20 years. Many of her paintings draw on memories of visiting her mother in the countryside outside Rio de Janeiro. There she observed many people working in agriculture and raising. She is self taught (in the naif tradition) and always wanted to be able to make a living independently and be her own boss. Her strong independent spirit and that of her fellow Brazilian women is reflected in many of her paintings as they play a strong role.
